Sports Wall Graphics – Feel Your Team Spirit

From that first little league softball game to that spiral kick on the football field that gives many of us the true devotion for the love of the game. A sport not only builds character but by participating you become part of a team. We all have different attributes and interests which make every person unique. Our surroundings should become part of us and help to proudly display our personalities. With sports consuming a big portion of our lives, it would only be natural to want to show off our pride to others.

A new interior decorating idea that has become very popular is to use vinyl wall decals. Fortunately, for the sports enthusiast there are numerous sport wall graphics literally from skateboarding to rock climbing. Gift giving seems like it is getting harder and harder no mater who the recipient is. This example might get your imagination churning. For my nephews high school graduation gift I put together sport wall graphics for his new dorm room for college. He was a huge fan of the hometown soccer league in his area. He also had a black belt in karate. Without his knowledge I was able to capture him at a competition and had a wall sports graphics mural made from that snap shot.

To his amazement I also had every face of all the soccer players. When I came to visit him on a family weekend I was the one that was amazed to see the work of art he had created with my gift. When you entered his domain you had the feeling you were enveloped in the world of sports. It was an awesome feeling.

Formula One Funding; Merchandise, Sponsorship And Big Business

The funding of Formula 1 is a mystery for many fans and even those inside the sport’s inner circles have trouble understanding the complexities. What is generally known is that funding for Formula 1 consists of huge sponsorship, television coverage and merchandise sales. The merchandise sales are somewhat of an afterthought for sponsors but as the popularity of Formula 1 is growing the merchandise market is also on the increase.

Formula 1 is like many other sports in respect to television coverage. Advertisers will pay for slots in the TV coverage and may even sponsor a specific channel’s coverage of an event. This lucrative method brings vast amounts of funding to the organising body of Formula 1, the FIA as well as its funding company, Formula One. This is important as Formula One is in the driving seat of presenting the Formula 1 package to the public, hence it needs immense funding to carry out these roles.

The Formula 1 teams support themselves in a number of ways; the bigger teams will be able to court sponsors from some of the biggest names in business, whereas smaller teams must make do with lower profiles patrons. Teams also produce their own merchandise ranges to cater for the needs of the average fans; once again the more popular teams obviously make more money.

Venues in the Formula 1 calendar are somewhat limited with their advertising freedom. As Formula 1 is ran by a small number of big business share holders the venue bosses are pushed out of the commercial decisions. Most venues do not have the rights to place their own signage and must pay to host the race. The majority of money made by venues is in the ticket and merchandise sales once fans are inside the track.

This explains why Formula 1 tickets can be very expensive, mainly due to venue managers trying to recoup some of the 13 million dollars they fork out annually to host a race. Hosting a Formula 1 race however is more about the prestige of being a premier world race track.

Formula One is the name of the business behind the sport of Formula 1; it is these businessmen and financiers that control how each race is funded and which sponsors are given preferential treatment. They also decide how much to ‘top up’ F1 teams’ merchandise and sponsorship profits; although this is kept a secret and can sometimes cause friction between teams.

The teams in recent years have not been making enough money from merchandise and sponsorship sales and are beginning to barter for more money from Formula One. Their argument is that they are the entertainers in the sport and so should get a bigger slice of the cake, whether this will be successful is doubtable.

The drivers are not paid from Formula One funds but are employees of the racing teams. The astronomical sums that many of them receive are incomprehensible to those on an average wage, they are however the best drivers in the world and have worked hard to get where they are. The popular drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso can also sign separate merchandising deals, usually for such luxury items as watches and jewellery.

The Formula 1 gravy train is driven by the big business that is Formula One, while Bernie Ecclestone holds a small part of the power in Formula 1; the big businesses that put up a lot of the funding ultimately demand respect. The bankers of the Formula One Company balance payment and income to keep Formula 1 at the pinnacle of motor racing entertainment.

Seemingly the biggest losers in the Formula 1 world are the venues, as ticket sales are most probably the smallest income when compared with the huge TV sponsorship and merchandise deals. In what is seen as an exclusive sport for the rich, the average fan can only afford his team’s merchandise. With high ticket prices and the worldwide nature of the sport it is hard for anyone but the super rich to follow this sport closely from the trackside.

Mercedes-Benz and Motorsports

Mercedes-Benz can claim to have one of the longest running associations with motor racing than any other automobile manufacturer. Mercedes-Benz claims to have taken part in the very first car race, all the way back in 1894 between Paris and Rouen in France. Hence its relationship with Grand Prix racing is as old as the sport itself.

Now after years as McLaren’s engine supplier, Mercedes-Benz will now also step into the ring to fight alone this season, following their November takeover of the Brawn team.

Motor racing became increasingly popular after the World War-I as cars became progressively more powerful and tracks were created, normally on closed public roads. The Nazi regime in Germany had recognised the propaganda value that racing offered and both the Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union teams were encouraged to build the fastest and most exciting cars possible to race against each other.

Those days were a period of intense, dramatic and incredibly dangerous racing. The speed and performance of racing cars was completely unmatched by any safety provisions.

Racing was suspended during the war and it took some time for Mercedes-Benz to return to the racing battlefield. It was in the 1951 race in Argentina that Neubauer re-entered the racing scene with three pre-war race cars. A full return was made to the new Formula One category in 1954 with the beautiful W196, adapted from the 300 SL sports car and powered by a fuel injected eight cylinder in-line engine. Drivers Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling scored a commanding one-two victory in the car’s very first outing at the 1954 French Grand Prix and Fangio won the World Championship. In 1955 Mercedes-Benz withdrew from motorsport following a massive accident at the 24 Hours Le Mans race when Pierre Levegh of Mercedes-Benz somersaulted into a stand at over 241 km/h after a collision and 79 spectators were killed. The company only returned to motorsport again in 1984, entering touring car and then sports car racing.

The Tifosi; Most Avid Fans In Motor Sport

There is little doubt that Scuderia Ferrari, the racing wing of the well known road car manufacturer has some of the most loyal fans in all of motor sport. Ferrari fans adorn the grandstands dressed head to toe in Ferrari merchandise. It is unsurprising that Ferrari fanatics follow their team so avidly when the levels of success the team have encountered during their illustrious past is considered.

Possessing almost all of the records worth mentioning in Formula 1, it is little wonder that hoards of fans stampede Ferrari shops to kit themselves out in affiliated merchandise at the beginning of each and every season.

This is expected in Ferrari’s home nation of Italy, a country where the inhabitants have long been viewed as energetic and vigorous in their passions. Ferrari merchandise however sells worldwide, and at nearly every race in the Formula 1 calendar the prancing horse is seen fluttering in the crowd.

Scuderia Ferrari’s record speaks for itself; they have claimed the constructor’s championship fifteen times and have equalled that in the driver’s championship. They also have the top position in the all time wins category with 201 and are tied with McLaren for most wins in a season at fifteen. Holding records in many of the categories of Formula 1, including most all time podium finishes and championship points ensures their fans buy team merchandise year in, year out.

Referred to in Italy as the Tifosi, a term generally assigned to football fans, Ferrari racing enthusiasts are loyal to the extreme. Unlike many motor sport followers who support drivers rather than teams on a nationality basis, the Tifosi are as ardent as any Italian football supporters. A common sight at the San Marino Grand Prix is the sea of red, as fans pack the stadium sporting their Ferrari merchandise.

In recent years Ferrari experienced a rise in followers as Michael Schumacher’s success brought droves of fans to the team. Merchandise sales went through the roof as the most successful driver in Formula 1 history spent ten years with Scuderia. Sadly his departure from the sport in 2006 caused sorrow for many. Despite this loss fans have stayed loyal, and with Kimi Raikkonon claiming the 2007 title, the popularity of this team is sure to carry on growing.

2007 was a year of controversy in Formula 1 due to the ‘spy gate’ saga, amid allegations of McLaren possessing information on the Ferrari car, the team took the constructor’s title. This did not detract however from one of the most exciting seasons in recent years, with a photo finish between Hamilton, Alonso and Raikkonon at the Brazilian Grand Prix. If next year’s season is anywhere near as exciting as this year’s; Ferrari’s merchandise sales will surely go through the roof once again.

Next year promises to be exhilarating for not just Ferrari but a number of other teams. 2007 unfortunately was a two horse race between Ferrari and McLaren but 2008 should be different. Whilst Ferrari are sticking with their proven combination of Raikkonon and Massa, both winners in their own right; Mclaren are going with the rookie team of Hamilton and Kovalainen.

This should surely cause fireworks as will Alonso’s return to Renault, a team he won two championship titles with. Added to this Honda will hopefully produce a competitive car so Jenson Button can also be a contender.

What is certain is that despite other teams raising their games, Ferrari will be at the forefront. Their heritage in the sport is inescapable, with so much support globally the army of fans that wear the prancing horse merchandise will see Ferrari once again as a front runner for both driver’s and constructor’s championships.
